Sergiy stumbles in Umag opener

Sergiy suffered a 6-7 (6), 4-6 loss to world no.70 Andrej Martin on Tuesday at the Konzum Croatia Open Umag. The players traded breaks twice in the first set. The 26-year-old Slovak prevailed in a tie-breaker 8-6. Stako was broken once in the second set which brought his singles campaign at the ATP 250 event to an end. The match lasted two hours and five minutes.

Stats: aces (1-2), double faults (5-3), total points won (85-95).

Sergiy teamed up with Lukas Dlouhy (CZE) in the doubles competition. They fell to Carlos Berlocq (ARG) and Pablo Cuevas (URU) in R1 (5-7, 4-6).

Davis Cup: Ukraine beats Austria 3-2

A dramatic final day in Kiev saw Ukraine progress at the expense of Austria. Jurgen Melzer came in to face Illya Marchenko and justified his inclusion coming from behind win 36 63 36 75 63 and force a deciding rubber between Sergiy Stakhovsky and Dennis Novak. The Ukrainian opened up a two set lead before rain fell and Novak returned with the greater impetus and stole the third set in a tiebreak. The comeback seemed truly on with the world No.195 serving for the fourth set only to surrender three straight games to his opponent as Stakhovsky completed a 63 63 67(8) 75 victory.
