The 17-year-old Romanian hope took the first set 6-2 with two breaks of serve. Stako fought back equally to force a decider, which he won easily to advance into the last 16 of the ATP World Tour 250 event in Bucharest, Romania.
He will next meet either no.6 seed Italian Andreas Seppi or Carlos Berlocq of Argentina.
Ukraine came out victorious in their Europe/Africa Zone Group I second round tie against Sweden in Malmo on Sunday. Sergiy secured the win for Ukraine in the fourth rubber beating Markus Eriksson 7-6, 7-6, 6-4. In the final rubber, Sergei Bubka defeated Rober Lindstedt, who retired with a back problem at one-set all.

Sergiy and Artem Smirnov gave Ukraine a 2-0 lead over Sweden in the tie for a place in the Davis Cup World Group play-offs on Friday. Sergiy earned a hard-fought victory over Johan Brunstrom, edging him 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 13-11 in the first rubber. In the second one, Artem Smirnov defeated Markus Eriksson 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.
Saturday's doubles will see Sergei Bubka and Denys Molchanov Brunstrom and Lindstedt.
