No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny knocked off Sergiy 6-4, 7-6(4) in the first round at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors Tuesday. The match lasted one hour and 49 minutes. Youzhny leads the head-to-head series against Stako 3-1.
Sergiy dropped serve in the first game of the match and that was enough for Youzhny to take the opener 6-4 in 42 minutes. At 5-4 in the second set, the Russian had a break advantage, but wasted two match points as Sergiy broke back levelling at 5-all. Two games later the set went to a tiebreaker, which Youzhny won 7-4.
This is Stako's third appearance at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors. He won this tournament in 2008 and a year later reached the quarter-finals.
Sergiy's ambitions of reaching the third round at the 2012 Australian Open have been dashed by No. 30 seed Kevin Anderson as he lost 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-3 in 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Stako started big dictating the game; he won 81 percent of points on first serve in the first set and Anderson could do nothing to stop him from taking it 6-3 in 34 minutes. Anderson made a comeback in the second set, breezing thriugh it 6-1 in 25 minutes. A tight third set ended in Anderson playing a strong tie-break and winning 7-3. The fourth set also went to Anderson with a lone break.

Sergiy is through to the second round of the Australian Open after beating fellow Ukrainian Ilya Marchenko 6-3, 6-7(11), 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The match lasted nearly four and a half hours.
Stako found his stride early to take the first set 6-3, but Marchenko raised his game in the second, taking it in the tie-break. Sergiy struggled in the third set as Marchenko seemed to be on fire and found his momentum, while Sergiy gave away points. Fortunately, in the fourth and fifth sets, Stako served very well, not allowing his opponent to break his serve.

Stako is out of the Apia International in Sydney as he was defeated by American qualifier Bobby Reynolds, 7-5 6-3, in the first round. The match lasted one hour and 21 minutes. It was the first head-to-head meeting
between the two.

The 2012 season began on a down note for Sergiy Tuesday with a 6-7(1), 6-2, 7-6(3) loss to Croatia's Ivo Karlovic in the first round of the Qatar ExonMobil Open in Doha. The match lasted two hours and 10 minutes. It was the fourth meeting between the two and they are tied at 2-2.
