Sergiy was defeated 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-0 in the opening round of the ATP Studena Croatia Open by Italy’s Potito Starace. This is Stako’s third first-round exit in a row on clay, having lost in Stuttgart and Hamburg. He definitely hopes for better luck on the US hardcourts!
The Italian swept through the first set in 34 minutes courtesy of two breaks of serve (at 2-2 and 5-3) and secured the opener 6-3. In the second set, Starace raced to a 3-1 lead following one break of serve. Stako, however, came back with an immediate break to love in the fifth game. Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina knocked out Sergiy with a 6-2, 6-3 win in one hour and 2 minutes at the German Open Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
The Argentinian served incredibly well today, winning 28 of 33 points on first serve, compared to Sergiy’s 20 of 38. Chela didn’t even face a break point throughout the entire match on his serve and managed to break Sergiy’s serve four times.
Stako will also play in doubles, partnering Filip Polasek of Slovakia. In the first round, they sensationally beat top seeds M. Fyrstenberg/M. Matkowski. In the quarter-finals, they will be up against Melo/Soares.
World No. 48 Sergiy has been knocked out of the MercedesCup in Stuttgart by German wild card Mischa Zverev, currently No. 150 in the ATP Rankings, in the first round. Sergiy lost 6-4, 6-3 in 86 minutes.
The 22-year-old German converted five of seven break point opportunities, compared to Stako’s only two of three, and won 79 per cent of first service points to avenge his Barcelona loss to Sergiy in April earlier this year.
Sergiy hit two aces today and committed three double faults.
The Ukrainian will also compete in doubles together with Marco Chiudinelli. In the first round to be played tomorrow, they will face Johan Brunstrom and Michal Mertinak.
