Rome: Stako Out of the Qualifiers

Stako, currently ranked 66th in the world, lost in the first round of the qualifiers to 32-year-old Oscar Hernandez of Spain on the Roman clay at the Foro Italico. Sergiy won the first set before Hernandez, a clear clay-court specialist, rolled out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win in two hours and 8 minutes.

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia is an annual tennis tournament held in Rome, Italy. It is an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event. The first tournament in Rome at the Foro Italico was held in 1935.

Barcelona: Stako quits with ‘sore arm’

Former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain recorded his 18th clay-court victory of the season, following the retirement of Sergiy in his debut appearance at the Barcelona Open Banco Sabadell. The 30-year-old Spaniard led 6-3, 4-2 when Sergiy retired with arm problems. This was the first head-to-head meeting between the players.

Sergiy’s next tournament will be the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome which begins on April 25th.

Barcelona: Sergiy Battles Through

 It was a tough match, but Sergiy is through to the second round of the Barcelona Open Banco Sabadell after he defeated world No. 91 Mischa Zverev of Germany in one hour and 56 minutes. It was the pair’s first head-to-head encounter at the ATP World Tour level. The final score was: 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Stako, currently No. 68 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings, improved to 8-7 on the season in singles play.

In the second round, Sergiy will be up against 7th seed (and former world No. 1) Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain.

Monte-Carlo: Sergiy falls in qualifying first round

World No. 66 Sergiy Stakhovsky was a casualty in the first round of qualifying at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Saturday.

Sergiy, a winner of two ATP World Tour titles, could only win 53 per cent of service points in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss to Ivan Navarro in two hours and 17 minutes. Navarro, who is still looking to win his first ATP World Tour match of the year, converted five of 13 break point opportunities.
